Purple and glossy, dark and inky, this vintage of the Colorino feels lighter in body than previous years, but still holds on to its gothic vibes – the lighter sensation of body gives an impression of verticality to the wine, less broad and more pointed and focused. Black cherry and blueberry aromas and flavours are attractively sweet but the palate is dry and the finish like the aftertaste of swallowing fine dark chocolate, a little more savoury and multilayered. If past years this wine might have been a fun suggestion for a lover of bold Aussie Shiraz wines, this vintage is for the cooler leaner, Northern Rhone style Syrah fans. To be drunk with a book by Bram Stoker.
This 100% Colorino, the rarest of our monovarietals, was the last monovarietal to be vinified and bottled at le Tolfe. Our monovarietals were all made in a spirit of curiosity and experimentation, and the Colorino at first appeared too rough, too rustic, for bottling as a monovarietal. As a final effort, le Tolfe winemaker Giacomo Mastretta transferred the Colorino into oak tonneaux and allowed it to rest. To everyone’s delight, the wine had matured into an expressive, refined Colorino.
