Genetically related to sangiovese, ciliegiolo shares many characteristics with its more famous relative, such as a heightened sensitivity to terroir. In our sandy soils in particular, the two varietals show even more similarities; the key difference being that our ciliegiolo is slightly less austere and more fruity. Some claim this fruitiness as the inspiration for the name, “ciliegiolo” (meaning “cherry,”) while others point to the large physical size of the berries produced by ciliegiolo vines.
